For those who haven't already seen it, there is a post here about saber lengths that go over the technical side. My goal with this short wisdom post is to give some insight into the impact of this on combat.
Knowing saber lengths is one thing, but what about applying that knowledge? That's what I am to do here. This is going to be an amazingly short post just to explain this concept.
Single Saber Choice: As mentioned in the saber length post, there are two sabers that stand out: Firebrand and Defender. All other hilts are shorter, especially Katarn which is the shortest in the game. This means that the obvious answer is to always use one of the longer ones. I don't think too much more needs explained there.
Staff v. Single: This is the more important area. In theory, because of the saber lengths, half-staff will always be shorter than single. This means that your medium swinging with staff is reduced in range. In fact, the discrepancy between sabers is so much, you would actually be better off using a Katarn-hilt medium stance than half-staff medium. You can see that comparison here:
Comparison is Vindicator, Firebrand, and Katarn in order.
As you can see, the staff having a length of 32 for the blade is still shorter, even though the hilt is longer. This means that the tradeoff for having a staff is that your half-staff is incredibly short compared to normal sabers. While I once would have said that its more beneficial to use staff for medium-mains since half-staff medium cannot cartwheel (no accidental deaths while trying to air people!), I'm forced to retract that after seeing just how much shorter it is.
