It's been a long time since the last post, and it's time to start doing more updates! Today's post will be explaining the differences between hilts, saber tags, and saber lengths. Thanks to Art, Bucky, Circa, and Dzon for providing information and helping with testing! All data here has been trial-tested and confirmed to ensure the best-quality information.
So, lets first explain a few terms:
Blade Length: The actual value of the length of the saber in code.
Saber Tag: The location on a saber model where the blade is tagged to start at; where the blade emits from.
Origin: The point on a hilt where the player holds the saber.
It is valuable to note that the code-defined length of all single sabers is 40 units, and for all staff hilts its 32 units. This means the blade length is equal across all hilts.
Now lets look at some images (sorry they are so small, but you can click on them to enlarge!):
In these images, the origin is represented by the line with the orange dots, and the saber tags are represented by the brightly colored lines. Sabers with the same colored lines have the same saber tag placements.
As you'll notice, all staff hilts have identical blade tags. Single hilts, however, all share different tags. Because of this, not all single hilts are created equal. As you an see from this in-game shot, some hilts are a few units short of others:
Blue saber is Firebrand, Yellow saber is Katarn.
This is because even though the blade length is the same, the tag for the start of the saber is lower on some hilts than others, meaning that the saber will physically be shorter in-game and have less in-game range than other sabers. Moral of the story? Put down that extra-short Katarn hilt and pick up a Defender or Firebrand!
It is also worth noting that, because staff sabers are shorter, using medium with staff will actually have less range than using medium with single.
