So before we begin, here is a disclaimer: This post is made for new players. If you have played JKA for more than a month, then do not read this, because it will likely be exceptionally boring information that you already know.
That in mind, this post will be entirely on the different kinds of Katas and why you should never use them.
Allow me to start by defining "Kata" for you. A Kata is generally how the JKA community refers to any fully automated action that effectively locks you in animation and, while it may be devastatingly lethal, is so extremely predictable and easy to kill, that it has became useless. It is debated whether or not "Kata" refers to all of these types of attacks or only the stationary katas, but for the purpose of this, I'm including them all under this one banner for simplicity. Killing someone with a Kata is generally considered laughable or an insult, as Katas are almost exclusively used by people who are new to the game. That said, below are all the Katas and a little information about each.
Types of Katas
Stationary Katas: Stationary Katas leave you stuck. These are the worst you can do, and leave you completely open to a stab to the face. All of these are done by pressing Attack + Alt Attack at the same time.
Fast Style/Blue Kata: Useless.
Medium Style/Yellow Kata: Useless.
Strong Style/Red Kata: Useless.
Duals Kata: Annoying and useless.
Staff Kata: Useless.
Air/Motion Katas: These are motion attacks, but still lock you into animations. Slightly less likely to get you killed, but still ill-advised. All of these are done by pressing Attack + Jump + Forward (W). The exceptions to this are the Staff Butterfly, which can be done with W, A, or D because it also replaces the Cartwheel animations that duals and single normally have, and the staff air attack.
Strong Style/Red DFA: Mostly useless except for fancy tricks and red DFA sorcery ( See : jkaphantoms.proboards.com/thread/13/red-dfa-glitch-sorcery )
Medium Style/Yellow DFA: My personal favorite for fun overhead kills. It's still useless though.
Duals Butterfly: Useless.
Staff Butterfly: #1 most used noob move, and while technically useless, its not exactly hard to accidentally be caught in it.
Staff Air Attack: This one is.. A bit harder. You have to do Jump + Attack + Backwards (S). It can be done (easier, in my opinion) by holding W moving forward, then switching to S and doing the kata all at once. This will cause you to do this with a forward motion.
Crouch Katas: All crouch katas are done by pressing Crouch + Attack + Forward (W). The only relatively useful one of these is the Lunge for its speed and damage dealing, but it is still extremely risky if done wrong.
Fast Style/Blue Lunge: Actually somewhat not useless. But mostly still useless. Fancy kills though!
Duals Flurry: Totally useless.
Staff Twirl: Yep, useless.
Circumstantial Katas: Each of these have special circumstances where they will be activated, which will be explained individually.
Back Stab: The opponent has to be behind you, and you have to press Attack + Backwards (S).
Backslash: Same as the backstab.
Rollstab: Roll (Crouch+Direction) then attack (Direction+Attack).
Staff Air Attack: This one is.. A bit harder. You have to do Jump + Attack + Backwards (S). It can be done (easier, in my opinion) by holding W moving forward, then switching to S and doing the kata all at once. This will cause you to do this with a forward motion.
